Outdoor power equipment such as chainsaws, generators, snow throwers and water pumps can play a key role in storm preparation and recovery for homeowners and businesses, according to the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute.
OPEI recommends planning ahead and selecting equipment based on likely needs before severe weather occurs. During power outages, portable generators can help keep essential devices running, while utility-type vehicles can assist with moving people and supplies. Water pumps may be used to remove floodwater from basements and enclosed spaces.
The institute also emphasizes safe generator use, including following manufacturer instructions and using weather-rated extension cords to keep generators positioned at a safe distance from buildings.
Vegetation management tools can also support storm readiness. String trimmers, mowers and leaf blowers can help clear combustible material away from structures, while chainsaws and pole pruners can be used to remove damaged limbs and trim trees after storms.
OPEI said proper equipment selection and safe operation are key to preparing for and responding to unpredictable weather events.
