SAKAI's optional Guardman system has revolutionized asphalt roller safety, and its newly developed Echelon Mode takes jobsite protection to the next level. This innovative feature, available on the SW884 and SW994 highway-class rollers, enhances safety during echelon paving, a technique crucial for achieving smooth road surfaces.

Echelon paving involves two rollers working in close, slightly offset formation. While this method boosts productivity, it also presents unique safety challenges. The proximity of the rollers can trigger false alarms with traditional safety systems, disrupting the paving process. Echelon Mode cleverly solves this problem.

Guardman, an optional feature on SAKAI's 79-inch SW884 and 84-inch SW994 double drum rollers, uses sophisticated millimeter-wave radar to monitor the roller's surroundings. This radar technology detects obstacles, including machinery, vehicles, and personnel, even in challenging conditions like steam or darkness. It's more accurate and reliable than systems using less precise sensors. The system works by analyzing reflected radar waves, determining the distance, speed, and direction of objects. If a potential collision is detected, Guardman alerts the operator with audible and visual warnings. If the operator doesn't react, the system automatically applies the brakes, preventing accidents caused by fatigue or distraction.

Echelon Mode allows rollers to operate in close formation without triggering constant false alarms. The system recognizes the intentional proximity of the rollers and adjusts its sensitivity accordingly. Importantly, this mode doesn't disable Guardman's core safety functions. The system continues to monitor for potential collisions, both between the rollers and with other objects, ensuring that if a dangerous situation arises, like a worker entering the zone, Guardman will still intervene and apply the brakes.

A key element of Echelon Mode is the proximity indicator displayed on the Guardman screen. This gives the following roller operator real-time information about their distance from the lead roller. As the rollers get too close, the indicator warns the operator, allowing them to adjust their position and maintain a safe distance, optimizing echelon formation without activating the automatic braking.

Echelon Mode is easily activated and deactivated via the Guardman display, providing operators with flexibility to adapt to changing jobsite conditions. This user-friendly interface ensures efficient use of the system. With Echelon Mode, SAKAI has refined roller safety, addressing the particular demands of echelon paving. This technology empowers contractors to maximize efficiency and quality while maintaining the highest safety standards. By combining advanced radar technology with intelligent software, SAKAI Guardman and Echelon Mode represent a substantial leap forward in construction safety, protecting both workers and equipment and contributing to safer roads.
