At the 2024 Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, Mack Trucks announced two new variants of its MP13 engine that are being prepared for certification under the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2024 Omnibus regulations. These new diesel engines are designed to meet stricter emissions requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) that take effect for Class 8 trucks starting with model year 2024.

The CARB regulation mandates a 75% reduction in NOx and a 50% reduction in PM emissions compared to current EPA standards. The updated engines, rated at 425 horsepower with 1,750 lb.-ft. of torque and 455 horsepower with 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque, are expected to be offered in the Mack Pioneer™, the company’s latest on-highway Class 8 truck.

To support compliance, the engines include several updates:

  • A new 10 kW heater integrated into the exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS)
  • An additional battery box and 48-volt alternator to power the EATS components
  • Revised engine control software optimized for low NOx operation

Mack Trucks anticipates completing the certification process by the end of 2025. Once certified, the MP13 variants will be available to order for use in Pioneer models sold in markets subject to CARB rules, such as California.

The company continues to pursue parallel efforts in low- and zero-emissions technologies, including battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell systems, while also updating its diesel offerings to meet evolving regulatory demands.
